MISB Bocconi Alumni Spotlight – Rahul Hisaria, PGPB Class of 2014

1. What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishments (both personally and professionally) and how MISB Bocconi aided to your growth?! I have several notable accomplishments in my career so it is tough to pick one. Probably one of the most recent accomplishment, which also happens to be one the most notable, is thriving and succeeding in a foreign country that has a completely different language, culture, lifestyle, work environment. Within a few months of joining the company, I was entrusted with numerous assignments. I think I have tremendously grown personally as well as professionally after embarking on this journey las year. My experience at MISB Bocconi, which included cross-cultural exchanges such as- sessions by faculty from across the globe, campus exchange programs, curriculum packed with international business cases, helped me adapt to a completely new environment. 2. How did you become interested in your field? Being an Engineer, I have always taken a great deal of interest in numbers and operational procedures. Moreover, during my course at Bocconi, I had opportunities to exchange thoughts with very well known professors/people in this field. This reinforced my decision to pursue a career in Procurement. Procurement, though not a very glamorous job, is an area of great potential especially in the current scenario, where every company is trying to keep afloat by cutting its costs. Since typically half of a manufacturing company’s cost is managed by the procurement function, it provides a world of opportunities in itself. I found this field very appealing and hence, decided to take a plunge. 3. What do you enjoy most about your current career position? My current position offers an interesting mix of internal marketing and interaction with people (mostly Vendors/Suppliers). It works in close association with functions like R&D, Design, Quality, and Production. In my role, there are vast data sets to be analyzed with just the aim of finding opportunities to cut costs. After analysis of data, one has to prepare suitable strategies for each category of parts that we source. There is always a challenge to reduce costs through numerous existing ways but since new obstacles/opportunities arise in a competitive market, we are always developing new processes and ways in order to achieve our aim of cost reduction. Moreover, interaction with Italian and foreign suppliers is one of the things which make this functionality a very engaging and fascinating job. Furthermore, I enjoy my current position because of the friendly and helping environment in my team. They have been very supportive, right from helping me out in polishing my language skills to clearing out my work-related doubts. 4. What have been the biggest challenges in your career? Did your experiences at MISB Bocconi help you to overcome obstacles you’ve faced at Elica? The biggest challenge after coming to Italy undoubtedly has been the language. People rarely speak English and is very difficult to manage when you are in a meeting where most of the conversations are done in Italian. To some extent, exchange program conducted by Bocconi helped to overcome this obstacle as I learned basic Italian language. Moreover, MISB Bocconi has also taught me the importance of perseverance, one of the greatest asset to possess in one’s life. 5. Looking back, what would you say was the most challenging aspect of MISB Bocconi? How would you advise others who may be facing that challenge?! The most challenging aspect of MISB Bocconi was the whole curriculum, which was very comprehensive covering more subjects than those in any other institutes. At any given point in time, we were studying 2-3 subjects which became demanding at some instances. To overcome this becoming an out-of-hands situation, we had to manage our work time really well and by that, I mean we had to maximize the overlap of each team members work-time. Moreover, we stipulated time for each category of activity and once we were ready to go, we would assign each activity to the best suitable person at hand. So usually, we would complete our projects in a timely and efficient manner. This way of time management that I followed in MISB is proving to be an asset in my workplace as well. 6. Describe any significant relationships with fellow colleagues at Elica. How did your friendships with other colleagues help you?! I have made several good friends in Elica. My relationship with my colleagues is cordial. From the day one they have been helpful and supported me wholeheartedly. I feel comfortable in the office and I have no hesitations at all in reaching them for any help. In particular, there are some colleagues who helped me during my initial months of coming to Italy right from finding a house to helping me with language issues. Moreover, most of the time we discuss about cultures, traditions, countries etc. and it is quite interesting to hear and learn from their stories and experience. Their support has been overwhelming. 7. What advice would you give to younger alumni or current students who aspire to follow a similar career path?! I would like to tell them that always look out for the field that really interests you. Now, by interest I mean something that absorbs your full attention every time you come across it. What you learn in college is just the guiding light, it is up to you how you want to shape your career, which growth path do you want for yourself etc. Coming to following the same career path as mine, I think it is imperative to know data analysis. There are tons of data, which are the building blocks of your analysis. MS Excel is an indispensable tool. Moreover, one needs to be a good communicator in order to influence other people and explain one’s idea quickly and concisely. Equally, being a good listener is also important. Finally, one needs to have bags of confidence and natural curiosity. 8. What was the best activity you did at MISB Bocconi? Or Do you have
At The End Of The First Trimester At MISB Bocconi One Feels…
This article is written by PGPB5 student Arko Biswas Alongside the long Diwali weekend, the first trimester at MISB Bocconi also came to an end last week. It was 4 months of new introductions and experiences as I began my journey. It has been quite a start, as someone from a conservative Mumbai College it has been quite a journey. The first thing that appealed to me about my class at MISB was the remarkable diversity that had been assembled for the 5th PGPB batch. I got the opportunity to meet colleagues from almost every state in India. This has played a significant role in broadening my worldview. I have never lived outside of Mumbai before and it was quite a thrill to meet people different states and backgrounds. This was also probably the first time when I hung out with a group where every individual was from a different state and had their unique sense of humor and eccentricities. This impact this exposure had on me cannot be understated. Academically, MISB has been a period of adaptation and great exposure. Having spent most of my life in the typically mechanical learning based Indian education system MISB has been a welcome change in pace. Meeting professors that genuinely care about the learning process their students go through and get involved in our lives by providing a personal touch. For instance, almost every professor has shared with us details of their families and personal lives, sometimes in the span of a few weeks we develop a bond deep enough for them to share stories about their children and insightful tales of their career experiences. In fact, at MISB we are even encouraged to invite our professors out for drinks on the weekends. This unique relationship that we develop with our professors is one of the reasons why MISB has been so academically enriching. These few months at MISB have also been instrumental in changing my opinion of myself, coming into the course I was young graduate full of self-belief and a know it all attitude. However spending time with my new colleagues and professors has been eye-opening. It has been a humbling experience as I have come to realize the caliber of competition that I will have to face as I step into the market after my MBA. Facing my first intensive day of interviews and group discussions, competing with classmates who pushed me to be the best has been one of the highlights of the last few months. Additionally, the best thing about studying and working at MISB has been the batch size. As a result of which we have become a close-knit group. I have learned about solidarity and facing challenges as a unit. Every time a colleague wins a competition or lands a good internship I believe we all feel proud together. We are quick to share opportunities with each other and help each other out. Even the administration and career development services are able to give personal attention to almost every student, which will make a huge difference in the long run. In summation, the first trimester at MISB has been a wholesome ride. Combining the hectic life of an MBA program with the growth experience of making new friends and forging bonds with our professors, its had been a start of changing opinions and broadening horizons. A solid bedrock has been laid for the program ahead as we as a class work to better ourselves and eventually step out into the world as proud Bocconians.

Bocconian in Powai
This article is written by Livia Thomas of PGPB5 Its 4PM and you’re dying to just get out of class so you can do that epic Bollywood run in fields of daisies towards your best friend from the other class and into the outside world. Okay maybe not that dramatic, but here’s what your life post 4PM in Powai is going to look like through the week. Powai is kind of a hub of everything you need. It’s like a goodie bag of all your needs and wants. To meet your grocery needs, Powai offers you D Mart (most of their stuff is discounted) and Haiko. Try to not go there on Friday nights or weekend nights – if you have to go, I would suggest carrying a bottle of water and some tents because it’s gonna be a looong night at the cash counter. Powai has an array of restaurants ranging from a Maggi budget to a Sushi budget. When you’re broke, I would suggest eating from Santosh Café (All mallus, take note), Faasos, Relishus, Curry me Up and Gold Coin (Check Zomato for more restaurants in the like). There are a lot of dabba systems around here in case you want home cooked meals. When you feel rich and fabulous, go down the lane after D-Mart you’ll come across a lot of fancy nice places like Red Olives, Pizza Express, Chili’s etc. There are also places like Subway, Papa John’s etc on the same lane. Sugar lovers, not to fret, Powai has Theobroma’s, Naturals Ice Cream, Aromas and SO much more! Now let me introduce you to our second home after college GALLERIA. This is a mini hub where you have all sorts of stores ranging from electronics stores to chaatwaalas to other eateries to accessories shops . Okay you get the idea. You sort of have to pass by Galleria to get to a lot of spots in Powai. You party people, you! We have the famous Harry’s Pub, Rumours Lounge (they have karaoke! Can I hear an Amen?!), Rude Lounge (great music, lot of space, good crowd, good food) and a lot other places. Don’t worry, we have budget places in this category as well. Phew, guys, there is a lot more to explore in Powai. If I tell you everything, what’s the fun in going to a new place? So let me take leave here and let you guys do the exploration. Welcome to Powai, folks!
4 benefits of engaging in a Competition
Written by Kaustubh Shinde PGPB class of 2018 When I finalized my Business school admission, I was curious about what Business School students end up doing during first few months of business school life. I headed to MISB Bocconi to find out how my new classmates are. The novelty week was just about finding my feet, but discovered that getting acquainted with new classmates in a relatively relaxed atmosphere is a great way to start building your network! You never know who might be instrumental to your post-MBA career. This networking got me in touch with two of the talented classmates from the crop of my peers. Studying together & hanging out post classroom sessions became an ordeal. We won competition named KHS Opstrax 2016 at IIM Ahmedabad a Operations Case Study competition (Part of confluence 2016) and IIT Kanpur Sanchalan 2016 Operations Case Study Competition to name a few. Suddenly during our Club sessions (MISB Bocconi has 7 fully functional clubs), we came across a Case Study Competition which could test our learnings in the domain of Operations & Consulting combined. Today after winning 4 national level case study competitions across 4 distinct Business schools, including the likes of IIMs I could summarize 4 key takeaways that keep us motivated about competitions & classroom based learning alike. 1. Exhibit Talent – Competitions give us a platform to not only exhibit our talent but also showcase our learning & application based knowledge we gain at MISB Bocconi. 2. Showcase the Winner tag on our CV’s – I believe that Star Performers are instantly recognizable not only because they are not afraid to show off their skills & talents but also embrace who they are. My team enters each and every competition to make a mark so that we can claim our own star statuses within the talent recruitment community. 3. Test ideas – Competitions allow us to test our ideas to see how viable they are. We get this to test in a risk-free environment where we are able to collect and incorporate constructive feedback from peers and professionals. 4. Setting & achieving benchmarks – The first time we stepped in shoes of winners, we set a benchmark at the location we won the competition, next we are doing competition X For next one month we trained ourselves academically as well as on interpersonal skills & made it as winners of completion X. This taught us perseverance & preparation go hand in hand. Just to summarize I would like to mention a quote I live by I am, as I’ve said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.• Billy Joel
One Semester with 7 faculties
My journey with MISB Bocconi started when I experienced one lecture as a prospective student. Not knowing what Supply Chain Management really was, I was almost under a spell when Prof. Thanos Papadimitrou was teaching. His practical experience combined with his knowledge had me really impressed. It was at this time I realised that some of the word’s best faculty comes down to teach and to share their vast expanse of wisdom. The trimester began from July 4th on a busy Monday. I suited up and was ready to be a part of the PGPB-5. While I found all this very exciting, I still remember the anxiousness and the remarkable amount of uncertainty that I faced before coming into MISB Bocconi. I started my tenure with Prof. Laura Zoni for pre-course accounts. Being from an engineering background, I had no idea what accounting was, but Prof Laura was able to drill in the basic concepts in my head. This was just one of the many instances where I have found myself devoid of any knowledge but the professor made it sure that I was well equipped with the necessary knowledge for a business student. Right from Prof. Pennarola for Organisation Behaviour and Design to Prof. Altomonte for Macroeconomics to Prof Durisin for Marketing, each and everyone of them inspired us and showed us the delicate intricacies involved in business. Each subject is covered in thirty hours of teaching which is spread across for about two weeks. The professor spend time teaching us, guiding us and being there for us. Having project work, assignments to exams, the professor tests us inside out, but outside classes we connected at a deeper level, sharing stories, creating memories and getting to know them better. Time was short and at MISB Bocconi, it always will be. At the end of the course, we save our final moments with the professors by clicking pics and giving them a parting gift. Once they part, we still stay in touch through email, Skype for any doubt solving or guidance. MISB Bocconi tests us everyday, from group projects to assignments to research papers to corporate live projects to competitions and applying for summer internships. Effective time management is a key factor for making the most of the PGPB program. The difference in the amount of time I spend improving myself than being with friends has grown. The work load never gets too absurd where you don’t have the time to breathe, but it is all about understanding what is most important and what needs to be done. While my schedule may be busy right now, I still find time to balance my social life and with college work. I have incorporated my mantra at MISB Bocconi as Work hard now, to play harder later. The Rise And Rise Of The Athleisure Wave
Surely you must have gotten wind of fast fashion retailers giving sportswear brands a run for their money in recent times? Say hello to athleisure aka performance wear aka active wear lines! It is described by Wikipedia as ‘a trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as during work, casual or social occasions.’ While I found it difficult to trace the roots of this trend, the 2012 Olympics and companies like Lululemon, a listed Canadian activewear retailer are said to have contributed to making athleisure popular amongst consumers in the UK and USA respectively. The trend can roughly be traced back to 2003 with sports brands like Adidas & Puma launching active wear lines in collaboration with high-end designers. Rising fitness consciousness, casualization of dress codes and increased comfort and functionality of sportswear are seen as activating factors to this trend. According to Morgan Stanley, the athleisure sector is currently worth over USD 270bn globally and is predicted to grow another 30% by 2020, especially in Asia and the US. The widespread adoption of sportswear on a daily basis has resulted in a consumer base that has become accustomed to the comfort of stretchy materials and elastic waistbands. Consumers are not willing to sacrifice this new-found everyday comfort, nor are they willing to compromise on style. Apparel retailers (fast fashion, premium wear & high end) foresee a considerable opportunity to tap into consumers’ increasing desire for products that are both functional and trendy. By integrating these lines into their offerings, fast fashion retailers like Gap, H&M, Uniqlo and New Look are surely giving sportswear brands like Nike, Adidas & Puma a serious run for their money. The luxury segment is also aiming for a share in the leisure fitness pie with the likes of Alexander Wang, Louis Vuitton, Victoria’s Secret and Net-a-Porterlaunching lines in the category. Bridging the gap between fast fashion retailers and high-end brands are premium sportswear brands like Sweaty Betty, Athleta,Alo Yoga and Under Armour dedicated to active wear. Not to be left behind are denim companies like Diesel, Levis& Wrangler (to name a few) which are hopping on to the ‘soft dressing’ wave by shifting focus towards manufacturing lightweight knit denim. Many apparel retailers describe yoga as an inspiration for their merchandise. Athleisureis largely popular in the UK & USA and was primarily dedicated to women, but in recent times, the focus has moved to the men’s category as well. Influencers to this trend include celebrities like Kate Hudson, Beyonce, Rihanna& Heidi Klum who have endorsed and some have even launched their own athleisure lines! Athleisure has only picked up in India in 2016 and has a long climb before the trend reaches the maturity stage. Several Indian fashion designers have launched lines inspired by the trend. So much so, the word athleisure has even found its way to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary in 2016! Don’t breathe easy yet, because athleisure is already being touted to evolve to ‘streetnic’ which is described as technical, stretch and street wear with focus on technically advanced features, with design and aesthetics considered secondary. Limited Space? Not really
MISB Bocconi, is comfortably situated in one of the most aristocratic locations of Mumbai, Powai. Powai offers a wide range of opportunities not only for personal needs but also for professional. The institute’s campus is on the 9th floor of the Hiranandani Knowledge Park building which also houses other schools and institutes. While international faculty, personal attention, an international trimester, and offspring of a legendary university speak in favour, a common yet important question that every candidate has before joining this institute, is whether this limited space sufficient. And as a pursuing candidate, I wish to clear these thick clouds of doubt. As I enter the campus through automatic glass doors, a warm reception welcomes me daily. The admissions office is situated behind the reception and a set of washrooms is quietly hidden at the back of large television screens which display regular time tables and the legacy of MISB’s parent university, SDA Bocconi. A gallery divides the classrooms and the study area, at the end of which lies a small canteen. MISB also provides lockers to its students along with a table tennis and foosball table. A printing machine is at rescue during assignments. And large windows in the canteen provide a scenic skyline of Powai’s skyscrapers. Although, a single floor, it hasn’t made me feel incomplete; but on the contrary, I am learning a great deal from it. A classroom with tennis table is turned into a hall for a guest lecture in the next hour. A quick run on this floor can call everyone back to the class in an urgency. Students in the study area with comfortable seating arrangements come together to, do assignments, study, chit-chat, take stress, fight, clear doubts, talk about life, share problems and mingle with each other to ultimately make memories. Walking out of classrooms imply, I’ll meet not only seniors but also the management and other faculty members keeping everybody in close contact. In addition, two adjacent classrooms which can be joined to make a single hall, account for the seminar room or mini-auditorium of MISB Bocconi. Flexibility is high again as a stage for guest speakers and a sound system can all be arranged for successful completion of all events. These adjustable classrooms tell me the great power & need of adaptability, and the secret to store a great deal of strength in a relatively small area. And, the lesson of being efficient in lesser available resources. Then, there will be days which are longer than anticipated and a student must work extra hours, to finish that assignment which is due in the morning. Times like these, will require some unusual tactics which can only be explored when the situation arises. So, that’s all folks! In short, is the campus limited? Yes. Is it restrictive? No. This Article is written by PGPB5 student Paritosh Agarwal Similar Read – Read Aadil Naik’s answer to Is MISB Bocconi, Mumbai a good college? on Quora
A Mumbaikar at MISB Bocconi
The day begins with an unfriendly noise of the alarm at 06:30 a.m. followed by some mental debate if there’s more time to sleep or not. There isn’t, so the debate sees a clear winner always. Some yoga to keep the mind, body and soul together consumes another 15 min. And then the song from Taare Zameen Par buzzes through every RBC of your body, Jame Raho. Rushing against time, getting ready, and trying to convince your mother that you’ve had enough food, gives you the entry ticket to the outside world of reality, every day. Every day at MISB Bocconi begins with a heart-warming ‘good morning’ from the security and the management. You provide your attendance of the day at the entrance with bio-metrics, and head to a day which you hope is going to get over early. The approaching footsteps of the professor brings in all the students to the class. After regular greetings, the class begins. Voice of the professor, sketch pens on the white board, pens scribbling on paper, keyboard clicks (if needed), and soft murmurs (at times) is what classes are like. The learning is intense. There are moments, when you will feel this is going to be a herculean task, or what is going on, or why am I even here, or I’m not liking this, or hey! This I understood. And it’s all about converting every such moment to this feeling of enlightenment. The satisfaction it holds, is something one should only experience. A little break in between lectures, for snacks and lunch makes the corridors of MISB Bocconi lively. ‘aaj khaane mein kya hai?’casual talks, discussions about the last class, upcoming assignments/deadlines, and stories from friends are a regular. There’s this thing that keeps the environment comfortable. We, be students inside the classroom but outside these doors, a warmth holds and binds us together and aren’t we so glad about it? Yes, we are. The little time that leaves us breathing after lectures goes in either attending guest lectures or preparing for assignments or thinking about how much traffic will you face if you leave at the current time. Guest lectures are another important crux at MISB Bocconi. The guests that visit us are motivating, inspiring, stimulating and drivers of change. They are the leaders who share a part of their lives with youngsters like us. At times, it may seem irrelevant but their experience shall hit us some day and this is when we know we are growing. Post this, the day ends and we bid goodbyes until the next day (even if it is a Sunday, at times). For Mumbaikars, the traffic awaits us, but the feeling of sleeping on your bed, is comforting and recharging. To end, isn’t it always about the strength you possess? Growing, and learning and sharing that experience. This is what life at MISB Bocconi is. We, fight, struggle, receive from reality, make memories, learn, share and grow. It’s tough here, yes, but it will be worth it and this keeps us going. This Article is written by PGPB5 student Paritosh Agarwal
